States' Rights
During this time period the northern and southern states argued over many things. A huge topic was whether or not to abolish slavery from the United States. Many northerns thought the practice of keeping slaves to do work was inhumane and should be outlawed. At the same time many southerns disagreed with the north.
Many southern states decided to drop out of The Union and form their own. This was called The Confederate States of America. The states that decided to drop out of the Union and join the Confederacy was South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Later on Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina also join the confederacy. This made a total of eleven states dropping out of the Union. Very quickly they wrote their own Constitution modeled after the US Constitution. They elected Jefferson Davis as president and Alexander Stephens as vice president.

Formation of the confederate states of America
After Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States many southern states disagreed with his views and no longer wanted to be apart of The Union. They dropped out and formed their own called The Confederate States of America. Doing this slowly split apart the country. Lincoln could not keep the country together.
